Since 2017 Stripy Sock have been the National Portrait Gallery’s digital partner, developing apps that extend and enhance the in-gallery experience.

In Their Own Words

In Their Own Words is an audio-guide with a difference, where portraits of these remarkable Australians speak for themselves. Be intrigued and inspired by two-minute personal stories told by the subjects and the artists as you encounter them.

HeadHunt!

HeadHunt encourages school children visiting the gallery to take the lead and independently explore the National Portrait Gallery.

HeadHunt uses image detection and indoor positioning technology to help the students find their favourite portraits before taking notes, photos and audio. Their work is shared with a supervising teacher who is able to see all student activities in real-time.

During COVID we created HeadHunt@Home, which delivered the same great experience without needing to visit the gallery.

Portrait Stories

Portrait Stories features images of over 1700 portraits from the National Portrait Gallery collection, as well as interviews, stories and video featuring the subjects and artists.
